About the La Jolla Reading Room Sound Installation
Visit the Digital Humanities Center this semester to experience La Jolla Reading Room, an interactive sound installation by Matthew Hebert, SDSU Art + Design, with Jared Stanley, University of Nevada – Reno.
Composed of sculptures and sound recordings, the exhibition draws inspiration from the traditions of library reading rooms, places set aside for silent reading and contemplation, as well as the form of artists’ books, especially those which include the full spectrum of sensory experience in the act of reading. The sculptures resemble a set of reading tables arranged in a maze-like pattern. Recordings are composed of the voices of writers, artists, and book enthusiasts—a collaged chorus of readers, thinking aloud about the experience of reading and interacting with artists’ books.

Library exploration and explication: Select a book from the library catalog and go find it in the stacks. Document your process and explain your experience in a blog post that close reads the space of the library and the embodied experience of “searching” for information in physical space.
